NEWARK — The free ride for nonunion NJ Transit employees may be reaching the end of the line.

The state’s mass transit agency Monday announced plans to end a long-standing industrywide practice allowing transit employees unlimited free travel for nonbusiness purposes.

NJ Transit officials said they will propose changing their 30-year blanket privilege allowing nonunion employees unlimited free travel on rail, light rail and bus services. The proposal could be voted on by the agency’s board of directors Monday.

An estimated $1.6 million in fares is not collected from nonunion employees traveling for nonbusiness purposes, according to Nancy Snyder, NJ Transit spokeswoman.

The free pass is a long-standing practice from the days when private industry ran passenger trains.
