Transit worker Johnny Goings can’t swim — and he’s never been in a boat — but during Hurricane Sandy he pulled off a water rescue worthy of the Coast Guard.

When the sea surged over the banks of the Coney Island Creek, three of Goings’ co-workers, who had been driving near the MTA rail yard and maintenance facility there, suddenly were trapped by the chest-high flood. They scrambled to the roof of a truck — and prayed.

Then, after more than two hours, Goings emerged through the torrent, navigating a raft that he grabbed from a stranded police truck.

“We were soaking wet, with hypothermia setting in,” transit electrician Eddie McConnin, 59, recalled. “He saved three lives. He was like a godsend out of nowhere.”
