LAS VEGAS – About 450 workers at the Flamingo Las Vegas/Margaritaville casinos voted Friday to join the UAW. The win is a first for casino dealers on the famed Las Vegas strip and follows recent union gaming victories for 4,000 casino workers in Ohio.

The dealers voted 233 in favor to 70 against for UAW representation in an election conducted Friday by the National Labor Relations Board.

“This is a great day for casino workers in Las Vegas,” said UAW Vice President Joe Ashton, who oversees the union’s Gaming Department. “It is also a great day for gaming workers everywhere who are asking themselves how they can stand up for good wages, benefits and democracy in the workplace.”

“Whether it’s Nevada, Ohio, Michigan, Connecticut or New Jersey, workers in the gaming industry all want decent wages, job security and respect on the job,” Ashton said.

“We welcome these workers into the UAW family and look forward to offering them whatever assistance they need,” said UAW Region 5 Director Gary Jones.

The win in Las Vegas follows an Ohio victory on Oct. 29 in which 1,100 casino workers in Cincinnati joined the union. The food and beverage dealers, slot technicians, maintenance, warehouse, valets and count and cage workers gained union recognition following an agreement with the company that it would remain neutral and allow workers to make their own decision.

The Cincinnati workers will be represented by the Casino Workers Council, which includes the UAW, the United Steelworkers, Teamsters and UNITE HERE. That group also represents 1,050 workers at the Horseshoe Casino in Cleveland who joined the union in August 2012.

In Toledo, 800 workers at the Hollywood Casino joined the union in February 2012. A month later, 1,050 workers at the Hollywood Casino in Columbus became union members. Casino workers in Columbus and Toledo are members of a coalition that includes the UAW and the United Steelworkers.

The UAW, one of the nation’s most diverse unions, also represents casino workers in Michigan, Indiana, New Jersey, Connecticut and Ohio.
