Lower fares are to thank for the continued growth in Des Moines\’ air traffic, airport officials say.

The airport saw 1.84 million passengers through the end of October, up 6.1 percent over the same time period in 2012, according to passenger data released Tuesday.

Ridership was up 3.6 percent in October compared to the same month the previous year.

Fares, meanwhile, are down about 7 percent since 2012, making Des Moines more competitive with airports in Kansas City and Omaha, said airport executive director Don Smithey.

\”We\’ve stopped a lot of leakage to other airports and more people are flying out of Des Moines,\” he said.

Smithey credited the introduction of low-fare carriers like Southwest Airlines with spurring other airlines to offer more competitive rates.

Southwest, which added daily flights to Las Vegas in September, has seen the biggest jump in passengers, nearly doubling its ridership from same period in 2012.
