Air- Southwest Airlines traffic rises 1.3% in October – MarketWatch

LUV +0.80% passenger traffic rose 1.3% during October from a year earlier as the carrier\’s capacity also continued to expand.

Southwest, the largest carrier of domestic U.S. passengers, has been moving away from its roots as a pioneer discount airline and looking to expand its service area beyond the 48 contiguous U.S. states.

Capacity increased 2.4% last month. The percentage of seats filled–or load factor–declined to 79.9% from 80.7%.

Passenger revenue per available seat mile–a key measure of performance for the sector–rose an estimated 1% to 2%.

The company recently reported that its third-quarter earnings soared as it trimmed its expenses, thanks to lower fuel costs, while revenue also improved.

Shares closed Wednesday at $17.80 and were inactive premarket. The stock is up 74% this year.
