Each dressed in orange, reflective vests, about 20 school bus drivers and aides attended Monday\’s meeting of the Burleson ISD board of trustees meeting to ask for their help.

The drivers would like district officials at least to consider a company other than Durham Transportation when its contract comes up for renewal.

One issue, according to shop steward Michael Blood, is what he described as wait time.

\”If we take a football team to a five-hour football game, we may be on wait time at minimum wage for three hours,\” he said. \”The school district is being charged full-time while at the same time the drivers are not being paid full-time.\”

About a year ago, bus drivers elected by a 42-12 vote to join the Transport Workers Union of America AFL-CIO. Blood had worked to negotiate a contract with Durham, one that still has not been completed.

\”Please consider having a company in here who wants to work with us,\” he said. \”We just want to be treated right, fair and have a voice.\”

According to Durham\’s website, its employees are the safest and best-trained with unmatched customer service. The company transports more than 1 million students daily. Durham, or a similar company, operating a transportation department can alleviate the burden on administrators, according to Durham\’s website. No Durham employee spoke at the meeting.

Bus driver Rodney Peacock informed trustees that many buses have issues such as inoperable heating, defrosters, damaged seats and other safety concerns.

But safety is \”Priority No. 1,\” according to Durham\’s website.

\”Our primary goal is to provide the safest transportation possible for students who ride our buses,\” the website reads. \”We don’t take that responsibility lightly.\”
