US Airways mechanics are conducting what they call “informational picketing” Wednesday at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

According to a news advisory issued Tuesday by the International Association of Mechanics and Aerospace Workers (IAM), the picketing has been called to protest “US Airways’ refusal to negotiate with its employees.”

Television coverage Wednesday morning showed a handful of picketers walking in front of the terminal, carrying signs asking US Airways management to negotiate a contract. Mechanics want negotiations to begin before a merger with American Airlines takes place.

Picketing is scheduled from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. outside the upper level of the airport’s terminal, in front of the US Airways ticketing area.

The IAM says it represents 14,000 mechanics, fleet service, maintenance instructors and stockroom employees.
