American Airlines‚ parent company AMR Corp. and US Airways Group announced Friday that they have entered into a non-disclosure agreement under which the companies will exchange certain confidential information in a step toward a possible merger, the South Florida Business Journal reports.

The agreement is in close collaboration with AMR’s unsecured creditors committee. The Fort Worth, Texas-based company (Pink Sheets: AAMRQ) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November. US Airways (NYSE: LCC) expressed interest in merging with the airline within days of the bankruptcy announcement.

The airlines said they do not expect to provide any further announcements regarding the status of the discussions until they have entered into a transaction or discussions are terminated, according to a joint news release.

American Airlines and US Airways are the fifth- and sixth-largest commercial carriers at Orlando International Airport, respectively.
