AKRON – Southwest Airlines will make its first appearance at Akron-Canton Airport on Sunday when it launches three daily direct flights to Denver and to Midway International Airport in Chicago.

Southwest, based in Dallas, bought the smaller AirTran Airways Inc. in a deal that closed May 2, 2011, but it still operates the two as separate airlines.

Although the company has dropped service to some cities where their routes overlap, a Southwest spokeswoman said the company will maintain its flights out of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, where it serves about 11 percent of passengers.
